I halfway home
.
the first part of a series researching migration and arrival cities. Focuses on the ‘fabric’ of the places where migrants come from and go to. I went to the places they come from and end up in. I photographed ‘arrival cities’ in Molenbeek, Kuregem, Morocco, Roumania and Granada.

Cars, Priests and Haircuts is the second part of the Halfway Home project. A trilogy that looks at how migration changes economic, religious and cultural patterns both in the receiving societies as in the issuing ones.
’Cars’ looks at the economy of the second hand car trade between Brussels and West-Africa as an example of how migration networks can influence and shape economic patterns. (see link in menu for the book.)
’Priests’ looks at changes within the muslim communities in Paris and Brussels and how they are influenced by what is happening in the heartlands of these communities. (Book due spring 2021)
’Haircuts’ is in progress and is also due in spring 2021.

III caïn & abel
.
The classic tale of the farmer that slays the nomad. Set in Siberia, I follow a people called Shors. They had the misfortune of living in a region rich in coal and ore. When the Sovjets started their industrial exploitation in the Kuzbazz area, they forced the (semi)nomads to settle and drove them off their lands.
The Shors subsequently not only lost their traditional grounds but also their way of life, their customs and ultimately their soul.

19th century Romanticism basically was the starting point for our dominant position and behaviour towards nature. It was the time of the great explorers and mountaineers.
Set in the Pyrenees, it’s a research on how Romantic concepts still influence the way we look at nature but also if Romanticism has changed by new ecological scientific research.
